Having lost his workplace in the earthquakes in Hatay, tinsmith Nebil Muratoğlu continues to keep his grandfather’s profession alive in the 9-square-meter workplace he built with his own means. Living in the central Antakya district, 61-year-old Muratoğlu’s workplace, inherited from his grandfather, was destroyed in the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023.

Muratoğlu, who lost his home, 15 relatives and his grandfather’s 150-year-old breadwinner in the earthquakes, moved to Antalya after the disaster. However, Muratoğlu, who could not bear to be separated from his profession and his hometown, returned to Hatay and rented a house.

Muratoğlu, who wanted to continue his profession of tinsmithing, could not find a job in prefabricated bazaars due to the risk of fire. Thereupon, he decided to build a workplace on the vacant land of an acquaintance in Haraparası Neighborhood and built a new 9-square-meter breadbasket with his own efforts.

Nebil Muratoğlu started to serve his fellow citizens again as of 2023. Muratoğlu, who said, “I will continue my profession as long as my health allows,” stated that he was the last representative of his grandfather’s profession and said, “Unfortunately, we could not arrange anyone for the profession. My son wanted to study and pursue his own profession. I will continue my profession as long as my health allows.”
