5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Taiwan's East Coast

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook the eastern coast of Taiwan on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic event occurred at 5:06 p.m. local time, at a depth of approximately seven miles beneath the surface. The epicenter was located about 25 miles south of the administrative seat of Yilan County, nestled on the island’s northeastern shoreline.

In a statement, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration reported a slightly higher magnitude of 5.7 for the quake. Fortunately, Taiwan’s fire department indicated that the earthquake did not result in any immediate reports of significant damage. However, they advised the public to remain vigilant regarding potential landslides in hilly regions.

The tremor was felt strongly in Taipei, the capital city, reminding residents of the island’s seismic activity. Notably, this earthquake struck in close proximity to the epicenter of a much more powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred in April, which tragically claimed the lives of 17 individuals.

Over the past few decades, Taiwan has bolstered its earthquake preparedness measures in response to the threat posed by destructive seismic events. This commitment to safety and resilience is a testament to the island’s proactive approach to natural disasters.
