Inflation Rates Show Signs of Easing in July

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) demonstrated a notable cooling trend in July when compared to the same month last year, offering further evidence that inflation is moderating. This development places the Federal Reserve on a clear path toward reducing interest rates at their upcoming meeting next month.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall inflation stood at 2.9 percent in July on a year-over-year basis, a slight decrease from 3 percent in June and marginally lower than economists’ expectations. Additionally, a core measure—one that excludes volatile food and energy prices—also showed signs of cooling.

This latest report marks a significant milestone in the Federal Reserve’s ongoing battle against soaring prices. Notably, it is the first instance in which this particular inflation measure has dipped below 3 percent since 2021. While price increases remain above the pre-pandemic norm of 2 percent, they are considerably slower than the staggering 9.1 percent peak recorded two years ago.

Economists assert that this inflation report strengthens the case for a rate cut during the Federal Reserve’s scheduled meeting on September 17-18. For context, Fed officials have maintained borrowing costs at 5.3 percent, the highest rate in over two decades, in an effort to slow consumer demand and stabilize price increases. As inflation has shown signs of easing, officials have been cautiously approaching the prospect of a rate cut, signaling their desire for further progress following their July meeting.

“The new data really ticks the box,” remarked Gennadiy Goldberg, head of U.S. rates strategy at TD Securities. He emphasized that the “big question” now revolves around the magnitude of the Federal Reserve’s anticipated reduction.
