According to senior American officials, Israel has reached the limits of what it can achieve through military action in Gaza. In many ways, the impact of Israel’s military operations has exceeded the expectations of U.S. officials at the onset of the conflict in October. The Israeli forces now enjoy greater operational freedom throughout Gaza, and Hamas has sustained significant losses. Crucial supply routes between Egypt and Gaza have been destroyed or captured by the Israeli military. However, one of Israel’s most pressing objectives—the recovery of approximately 115 hostages, both living and deceased, who were taken during the Hamas attacks on October 7—cannot be accomplished through military means, according to both current and former officials from the U.S. and Israel.
