According to security sources, an important stage has been reached in negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a permanent ceasefire and hostage swap. According to the text, which has not yet been finalized, the negotiation process between the parties is based on the principle of releasing 12 Palestinian prisoners for every hostage held by Hamas.

Israel is taking a sensitive approach to how and under what criteria it will release Palestinian prisoners in its prisons. Israel, which has approved the release of prisoners with sentences of less than 30 years, wants the release of those with sentences of more than 30 years to be at its discretion. In Israeli prisons, there are approximately 50 people with sentences of more than 30 years, including Marwan Barghouti, a symbol of the Fatah Movement in Palestine. This situation has led Israel to claim veto power over these names.

It is estimated that Hamas is holding around 120 Israeli hostages. It is also reported that other groups fighting against Israel in Gaza are also hosting various hostages. It is stated that Hamas has adopted a constructive stance and the process is progressing positively, with negotiations intensifying over the last 2.5 months.

It is emphasized that Turkey’s contributions to the negotiation process are of great importance in reaching this stage. However, another important point expressed by security sources is that the attitude of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has slowed down the process.

Sinvar’s Condition May Extend the Process

Another critical issue regarding the negotiations is the situation of Yahya Sinwar, who took over from Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’ political bureau who was assassinated in Iran. It is considered that Sinwar’s presence in Gaza may cause the approval or response period to be extended for the issues brought to the negotiation table.

Negotiations are expected to be concluded in the coming days as a result of efforts carried out by the US, Qatar and Egypt, with the support of Turkey, to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
