The U.S. Women’s National Team Clinches Olympic Gold Again

The U.S. women’s national soccer team has once again proven their dominance on the world stage by clinching the Olympic gold medal. This victory continues their storied tradition of excellence in women’s soccer. In the final match against Brazil, however, the U.S. team faced a challenging first half, unlike their previous games in the tournament. Despite earning four corner kicks, the USWNT struggled to find their rhythm, managing only two shots on goal before the halftime whistle.

Things almost took a dramatic turn for the five-time gold medalist when Brazil’s Ludmila had a goal disallowed for offside in the 16th minute. Nevertheless, the U.S. found their footing in the second half, with Mallory Swanson breaking the deadlock in the 57th minute. Midfielder Korbin Albert delivered a perfectly timed long ball that sliced through the Brazilian defense, reaching Swanson. The forward skillfully controlled the ball and shot low to the right of Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena, marking her fourth goal of the tournament.

In a poignant moment, Brazilian legend Marta entered the match in the 61st minute. This was her last significant international appearance, replacing Ludmila. Even with her presence on the field, Brazil could not penetrate a resolute U.S. defense, and they ultimately failed to score in the gold medal match—a feat that last occurred in 2008 when the U.S. shut out Brazil. The U.S. also triumphed over Brazil in the 2004 final.

As the match progressed into stoppage time, U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made another crucial save to secure the victory. The match was characterized by its intensity, as Brazil’s previous games in the tournament had consistently featured double-digit stoppage time.

Swanson Shines Bright Again

After a challenging recovery from injury in 2023, Mallory Swanson has emerged as a pivotal player for the U.S. team throughout these Olympics. Following a cautious first half in the final, she found the necessary space to break through and open the scoring.

Credit goes to midfielder Korbin Albert for her astute vision in the 57th minute. She skillfully lobbed the ball over the defensive line, seemingly aiming for teammate Sophia Smith. Anticipating an offside call, Smith made a strategic dummy run, drawing the attention of the Brazilian defense. This allowed Swanson to capitalize from an onside position, receive the ball, and execute a brilliant dribble into the box.

Swanson then showcased her skill by placing a well-aimed shot into the far corner with her dominant right foot, triggering an eruption of jubilation among the crowd. Notably, this goal marked a significant milestone for Swanson, as it was her 100th cap for the national team—a remarkable achievement for a player who just turned 26 in April. Initially recognized as a prodigious talent, Swanson had previously occupied less glamorous roles, such as a fullback, before finally stepping into a forward position.

Despite a torn patellar tendon sidelining her during the 2023 World Cup, Swanson has made a triumphant return during the Paris 2024 Games, proving she is a formidable force on the pitch once more.

Brazil’s Tactical Approach in the First Half

Throughout the tournament, the USWNT has consistently set a commanding tone by threatening opponents early in matches. They maintained an advantage in expected goals across their first five games, generating a higher volume of quality chances. However, finals often unfold differently, and Brazil came into the match with a determined strategy.

Brazil employed a clever tactical setup, with only four field players occupying the central third while positioning a center back, a wing-back, and a winger in the wide areas. This formation allowed Brazil to effectively close down passing lanes to U.S. wingers Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson, while simultaneously creating pressure on U.S. defenders Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox.

Although Brazil’s strategy proved effective in containing the U.S. attack, they were unable to convert their chances into goals. Alyssa Naeher was instrumental in keeping the scoreline level, making several key saves, and Brazil’s tactical adjustments showcased their intent to neutralize the U.S. strengths.

Marta’s Emotional Farewell

Seeing Marta enter the gold medal match and don the captain’s armband in the 61st minute was a moment filled with emotion and reverence. The crowd, even those cheering for the U.S., paused to honor the legendary player, recognizing her immense contributions to women’s soccer. Marta has dedicated her career to elevating the Brazilian program, often facing challenges regarding support and recognition.

Substituting for Ludmila, who had been a significant threat in the first half, Marta attempted to influence the game with her presence in midfield. The U.S. defenders were acutely aware of her skills, often trailing her in an effort to thwart her playmaking abilities. Despite her best efforts, Brazil struggled to break through the U.S. defense, and the late-game attacks fell short.

After the match, Marta was seen comforting her teammates and staff, embodying the spirit of a true leader. She leaves the Olympics as a silver medalist, but her legacy transcends any medal—she remains an enduring symbol of inspiration and representation in women’s soccer.
