The difficulties faced by the Rohingya Muslims have a historical background. In 2012, clashes between Buddhists and Muslims erupted in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, resulting in the deaths of many Muslims and the burning of hundreds of homes. These incidents marked the beginning of unrest in the region, and simultaneous attacks on border posts in Rakhine on 25 August 2017 were cited by the Myanmar military and Buddhist nationalists as justification for the launch of mass violence.

According to the United Nations (UN), the number of people fleeing oppression and persecution in Arakan has exceeded 900,000 as of August 2017. This has created a major humanitarian crisis in Bangladesh and led to international calls for aid to ensure the survival of Rohingya Muslims .
