Representative Eli Crane, an Arizona Republican and former Navy SEAL, has raised eyebrows with his recent remarks suggesting a broader conspiracy behind the attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump. Despite denying being a conspiracy theorist, Crane insinuated that the shooting was part of a coordinated effort by Democrats or shadowy government figures to prevent Trump from reclaiming the White House.

During an interview with right-wing radio personality Jeff Oravits, Crane stated, “Not only did they try and bankrupt him, but they tried to put him in prison. When that didn’t work, they tried to put him in prison for 750 years. And many of us said the next step in this escalation is for them to try and kill him because they know they can’t beat him fair and square.”

Crane, who visited the Pennsylvania rally site where Trump was shot, appeared on The Glenn Beck Program, saying, “I don’t want to be a conspiracy theorist, but at the same time, I don’t want to, you know, rule anything out because I don’t put it past some of the people in our government to do anything necessary to hold on to power.”

No evidence has surfaced to support Crane’s claims of a broader conspiracy. The lone gunman responsible for the shooting, Thomas Crooks, a 20-year-old registered Republican, left scant clues about his motives before being killed at the scene.

Despite this, Crane and other right-wing Republicans in Congress, along with G.O.P. candidates in the upcoming elections, continue to propagate these unfounded conspiracy theories. They suggest that Democrats and government entities may have been involved in the attempt on Trump’s life.
