Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” Creator Responds to Stalking Allegations
After being sued by a woman who claimed she inspired the stalker character in the popular series “Baby Reindeer,” creator Richard Gadd has filed court papers asserting that the show is a fictionalized retelling of real-life events.
Real-Life Stalking Experience
In a declaration submitted to federal court, Mr. Gadd revealed that the woman, Fiona Harvey, had stalked him in ways reminiscent of the character Martha’s behavior towards the protagonist Donny in “Baby Reindeer.” He detailed how Ms. Harvey incessantly visited him at his workplace, sent numerous emails, voicemails, and letters – some of which were sexually explicit or threatening.
Fictionalized Account
Mr. Gadd clarified that while the series is based on his life and real events, it is not a documentary or a realistic portrayal. He emphasized that “Baby Reindeer” is a dramatic work that captures emotional truths but is not a literal retelling of his experiences.
Lawsuit Response
Netflix has filed a motion to dismiss the defamation lawsuit brought by Ms. Harvey, who alleges that the character Martha defamed her by depicting her as a convicted stalker who commits sexual assault. Ms. Harvey maintains she has no criminal record and never assaulted Mr. Gadd.
