President Tayyip Erdoğan reacted to the calls made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to speak at the Turkish Grand National Assembly during his visit to Rize over the weekend. Erdoğan stated that they sent an invitation to Abbas but did not receive a positive response.

According to the details of the invitation provided by Erdoğan, the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, sent an invitation to Abbas on July 12. Abbas was scheduled to speak at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on the same day that Netanyahu was to speak at the US Congress.

The invitation signed by Kurtulmuş stated, “Your Excellency’s visit to our country and addressing the Turkish Grand National Assembly at a critical time for the Palestinian cause will be a historic occasion.” It was learned that Abbas declined the invitation, citing health problems.

AK Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik made statements regarding the invitation process of Palestinian President Abbas. Çelik said, “Mr. President stated that we should invite Mr. Abbas to the Turkish Grand National Assembly in order to reveal the truth. Abbas stated that he could not come, citing health problems.”
