The union’s written statement said that the images from the opening celebrations of the Paris Olympic Games had caused great discontent and called for respect for religions and sacred things. The World Union of Muslim Scholars strongly condemned the incident and stated that what happened was “a clear and serious insult to the Prophet Jesus and his apostles, religions and prophets.”
The statement noted that the events at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony “represent an unprecedented moral collapse and a clear violation of moral and humanitarian principles” and included the following statements:
- “This is an attack on the feelings of all believers in Allah and his prophets and an insult to their deepest convictions, and is also a clear violation of the spirit of unity and understanding in sports.”
- “Today, we are witnessing an increasing decline in all areas of life as the West abandons spiritual and moral values and begins to encourage the disintegration of the family, disregard for human relations and moral decline.”
- “The events that took place at the opening are rejected by all heavenly religions and common sense because they lead to the deterioration of societies and the spread of corruption, crime, hatred and disrespect among people.”
