For three and a half years, President Biden and his aides have emphasized the United States’ role as a Pacific power, reassuring allies in the region amid China’s growing influence. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken is set to embark on his most extensive trip in the region, visiting six nations to reinforce these commitments.

Upon his arrival in Vientiane, Laos, on Saturday, Secretary Blinken will address concerns regarding potential shifts in U.S. policy following President Biden’s announcement that he will not seek re-election. The international community awaits clarity on future U.S. leadership and its impact on global relations.

Amid uncertainties about the upcoming U.S. presidential election and the potential return of former President Donald J. Trump, allies seek reassurance on America’s steadfastness. Secretary Blinken aims to convey a message of unwavering American dedication to the Indo-Pacific region.

“I think the message that the secretary is going to be conveying to the region is that America is all in on the Indo-Pacific,” said Daniel J. Kritenbrink, emphasizing the Biden administration’s increased engagement in the region since its inception.
