Statement on Hamas by US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated at the daily press conference that Hamas would not have a role in the Palestinian administration. Miller said they had not yet reviewed the “Beijing Dialogue” text signed by Palestinian groups, but emphasized that Hamas is a terrorist organization.
Miller said that while they support the unification of Gaza and the West Bank and the Palestinian Authority’s administration, they do not foresee a role for Hamas. He also called on China to use its influence, especially through Iran, to reduce tensions in the region.
The “Beijing Dialogue”, signed as a result of the reconciliation talks attended by representatives of 14 Palestinian groups, aimed to end the divisions among Palestinian groups and create unity. China hosted a comprehensive national meeting attended by Palestinian groups, especially the Fatah Movement and Hamas.
