“Determination of Paleoseismological Characteristics of Active Faults in Türkiye” Project

The “Determination of Paleoseismological Characteristics of Active Faults in Turkey” project, carried out by AFAD and General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), is supported by TÜBİTAK.

Academician Committee and Their Work

Within the scope of the project, a 10-person academic team is conducting research in 12-meter-long trenches approximately 4 meters deep on the Bozova Fault between Şanlıurfa and Adıyaman. The team also includes geological engineers.

Dokuz Eylül University Earthquake Research and Application Center (DAUM) Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sümer shared the following information about the work carried out on the fault line:

  • The project gained momentum after the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş.
  • Within the scope of the studies, the history of the Bozova Fault is being examined and the effects of the fault on the Atatürk Dam are of particular importance.
  • Paleoseismological studies aim to determine possible earthquakes in the future by looking at the history of fault lines.

Relationship between Bozova Fault and Atatürk Dam

Bozova Fayı ve Atatürk Barajı İlişkisi

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sümer emphasized that the Bozova Fault does not cut the Atatürk Dam and that this is an important issue. It was stated that examining the fault line and determining possible risks are of great importance. Sümer stated that they observed that there is no alarming situation in the region at the moment.
