Geir Pedersen emphasized the presence of armed groups, terrorist organizations and foreign armies operating in Syria and the fact that civilians are still subjected to violence and human rights violations. He also stated that they organized sit-ins to demand the release of children held by the terrorist organization PKK/YPG.

Israel’s Influence on Syria

Pedersen, the UN Special Representative for Syria, stated that the ongoing oppressive practices, arbitrary detentions and torture in Syria have a negative impact on the Syrian people. He also stated that the risk of regional crises spilling over into Syria continues and that Israel’s aggressive stance in particular could lead to a new crisis.

Geir Pedersen highlighted the difficulties faced by countries hosting Syrian refugees and stressed the need to provide more support to these countries. He also stated that the voluntary return of Syrians should be supported and explained that the search for a new and comprehensive approach to a political solution continues.

Increase in Humanitarian Aid

Ramesh Rajasingham, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Representative in Geneva, has reported a decline in humanitarian aid to Syria. He noted challenges such as extreme heat and lack of access to water, reporting that the Syria humanitarian response plan was only 20% funded, and called on donors to provide more funding.
