In yesterday’s incident, a “propaganda broadcast” was made against North Korea via loud speakers placed in areas close to the South Korean border. This broadcast continued from Thursday evening until this morning. In a statement made by the South Korean Ministry of Defense, it was emphasized that if North Korea continued similar actions, the South Korean army would respond.
“Trash Bubble” Tension
North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea have sent large balloons filled with propaganda leaflets critical of Pyongyang to North Korea, which responded by sending more than 2,000 garbage-carrying balloons to South Korea starting in late May.
Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, accused South Korea of playing a “dirty game” by sending “leaflets criticizing Pyongyang” north of the border, in a statement she made on July 16. Kim said, “South Korea must be prepared to pay a heavy price for its dirty games.”
