Cheng Pei Pei, a pioneer for women in Asian martial arts cinema and renowned for her role in the blockbuster film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” passed away on July 17 in the San Francisco Bay Area at the age of 78.

Her representatives at Echelon Talent Management confirmed her demise, revealing that she had been battling a neurodegenerative disease similar to Parkinson’s since 2019.

Born on January 6, 1946, in Shanghai, Cheng Pei Pei kickstarted her acting journey in Hong Kong in 1964. She quickly rose to fame as one of the leading actresses in the wuxia genre of martial arts movies, with her breakthrough role in the mid-60s kung fu classic “Come Drink With Me.”

In a heartfelt statement, her family expressed, “Our beloved Cheng Pei Pei wanted to be remembered as the legendary ‘Queen of Martial Arts.’ She cherished her acting career and recognized the privilege of her success despite the challenges.”

Relocating to the United States in the 1970s, Cheng Pei Pei raised her four children while continuing to leave a lasting impact on the martial arts film industry.

Her portrayal of the villainous Jade Fox in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” solidified her status as a martial arts cinema icon, showcasing her talent in unforgettable fight sequences.

Despite her health struggles, Cheng Pei Pei chose to keep her medical condition private, demonstrating her strength and resilience.

She generously donated her brain to the Brain Support Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting individuals diagnosed with neurodegenerative disorders.
