Canakkale Forest Fire
The forest fire that broke out in the Kızılkeçili village of Çanakkale city center on July 16 last year was brought under control after 52 hours of work as a result of a great struggle. The flames spread rapidly due to the wind that was effective in the region during the fire and threatened the surrounding villages.
A total of more than 500 personnel, including 33 water tenders, 7 helicopters, 4 aircraft and support from the villagers from the Çanakkale Forestry Regional Directorate, took part in the firefighting efforts. In addition, teams from Balıkesir and Bursa supported the firefighting efforts.
During the fire, a total of 8 villages were affected and some villages were evacuated. With the darkening weather, the intervention continued throughout the night with the contribution of night vision helicopters.
On the morning of the third day, the fire was brought under control as a result of intensive intervention from the air and land. Turkish Armed Forces helicopters also took part in the extinguishing efforts and domestically produced extinguishing kits were used.
After the fire, 2,500 hectares of land were damaged and heavy material losses were experienced. However, with the miracle of nature, the fire areas started to grow again and regained vitality in a short time.
The firefighting operation, in which a total of 1,800 sorties were made and 4,900 tons of water were thrown, was successfully completed with the support of the local people. The region began to recover rapidly with the provision of the necessary support for producers who suffered losses in the Kızılkeçili forest fire.
