On June 20, Amtrak issued a cautionary message on social media, alerting passengers to potential delays of up to an hour due to high temperatures affecting the Northeast Corridor. This warning came after a severe heatwave had gripped the region for three days.

Later that same day, when temperatures soared to 96 degrees in Newark, Amtrak experienced a power outage near the Hudson River tunnels in New Jersey. The loss of electricity led to a complete halt in rail operations along a 150-mile stretch of the vital corridor, causing disruptions for over three hours. The repercussions of this incident lingered into the following day, with residual delays affecting train schedules.

An analysis of Amtrak data conducted by The New York Times revealed a surge in record delays attributed to severe weather conditions in recent years. These include heat waves, storms, floods, high winds, low temperatures, tornadoes, lightning, and wildfires.

During the 2023 fiscal year, spanning from October 2022 to September 2023, Amtrak trains encountered more than 4,010 hours of delays caused by extreme weather events. This figure represents the highest number of weather-related delays recorded in at least two decades, underscoring the growing challenges faced by rail services.

Passengers relying on Amtrak services have been significantly impacted by these weather-related delays, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and climate resilience measures to ensure the reliability of the nation’s rail network.
