French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his cabinet following the defeat in early general elections.

The “Together for the Republic” alliance led by Macron unexpectedly suffered defeats in the early general elections on June 30 and July 7. Following this development, Macron’s cabinet met for the first time at the Elysee Palace to evaluate new steps.

In a statement made by the Elysee Palace, it was stated that “President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of the government submitted by Gabriel Attal today.” Attal and his cabinet members will continue to run the general affairs of the country until a new government is appointed.

In this process, it was emphasized that pro-republican political forces should work together on projects and steps that serve the French people.

Resignation Following Election Defeat

Following the defeat of the ruling party Rönesans in the European Parliament elections in France, Macron had decided to call early general elections. However, when determining the deputies who will serve for 5 years, no party or alliance reached the number of seats that would provide an absolute majority in the Parliament.

According to the election results, the ruling party lost more than 90 MPs compared to the previous general elections and fell to third place. Following this situation, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal submitted his resignation and suggested that Macron continue in his post for the “stability of the country”.

With Macron accepting the resignation, it is expected that a new cabinet will be formed and the country’s administration will continue.

The left-wing alliance, which won the French election, is trying to agree on a common candidate for prime minister. Among the candidates put forward by different parties are names such as Huguette Bello and Laurence Tubiana, but a joint decision has not yet been reached.

The far-left party of the left alliance, Unbowed France (LFI), and the Socialist Party (PS) have different views on the prime ministerial candidate, so the process of choosing a joint prime ministerial candidate is still ongoing.
