US Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Robert Wood announced that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance following the coup in Myanmar has increased from 1 million to 18.6 million. Wood, in a statement on behalf of Turkey and other member states, expressed deep concern over the increasing violence.
“We are seeing a deepening humanitarian crisis in Myanmar,” Wood said, noting that there were credible reports of violations of international human rights law in Myanmar. He also warned that the “Myanmar regime” was using displaced people, including Rohingya, as human shields and that violence in the region was escalating.
