US State Department Spokesperson: Israel Has Right to Target ‘Militants’
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller responded to an AA reporter’s question at his daily press briefing about whether Israel’s right to target “militants” justifies killing civilians. Miller stated that many civilians had died and that they were working towards a ceasefire because they did not want more civilian deaths. He emphasized that Israel should make efforts to reduce civilian deaths.
Miller pointed out that Israeli authorities had stated that there were “militants” in the targeted areas, and said, “Israel has the right to target militants.” Arguing that militants were hiding in schools, mosques and hospitals, Miller said, “This makes the situation even more difficult for Israel, but nothing can justify the killing of civilians.”
Negotiations Continue for a Ceasefire
Miller also reported that negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza were ongoing. Noting that there were some issues that needed to be resolved, Miller noted that significant progress had been made. He said that while they were optimistic about the future, they continued to be realistic. He emphasized that an agreement between the parties was essential.
