Welcome to Small-Town Maine
When we purchased our home in Maine 23 years ago, the locals greeted us with stories of quirky incidents and amusing blunders. Tales of almost-burning barns, bursting pipes, and a neighbor building a fence down the road served as a humorous guide on navigating life in our new town.
Neighborly Insights
Our town, with around 830 residents, swells in the summer as part-time residents like us arrive. Anecdotes like the fence-building incident provided subtle cues on what behaviors were considered neighborly, especially in a community with minimal zoning regulations.
The Mysterious Magazine Room
Locals often asked about the “magazine room” on our house’s second floor, a peculiar space adorned with vintage clippings from early 1900s periodicals. We pledged to preserve its unique charm, promising not to alter it.
The Dilemma of the Hedge
Our beloved 11-foot deciduous hedge, which shielded our yard from the road, began to deteriorate. Despite efforts to revive it, experts deemed it an invasive weed. Reluctantly, we faced the decision to replace it with a fence.
