Shots rang out at a Trump rally on Saturday night. After shots were fired, chaos erupted as former president Donald Trump was swarmed by Secret Service agents. He clutched his right ear, blood spurting, and then quickly sought cover as his supporters screamed and agents shielded him.

Amid the tumult, someone shouted “shooter down,” prompting the agents to swiftly move Trump offstage. Despite the danger, Trump defiantly pumped his fist in the air and appeared to shout “Fight! Fight!” in response to the chaotic situation, as the crowd roared with chants of “U.S.A.!”

The shooting marked the first time in over four decades that a former U.S. president was targeted in an assassination attempt. The attack resulted in the death of one man, injuries to Trump, and critical wounds to two others. The assailant was swiftly neutralized by Secret Service snipers.

F.B.I. agents have initiated an investigation into the incident, treating it as a potential act of domestic terrorism and an assassination attempt. Officials stated that initial findings did not suggest the 20-year-old gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pa., was part of a larger conspiracy. Determining the motive behind the attack is the primary focus of the ongoing investigation.

While there was no evidence indicating mental health issues in the shooter, authorities disclosed that the gunman, a registered Republican, possessed a phone, a rifle, and a potentially “rudimentary” explosive device, all of which were sent to the F.B.I. lab for analysis. The shooter’s family is cooperating with the investigative efforts, according to F.B.I. sources.
