During July 1997, a significant event transpired between Sean Combs and myself. Contrary to the allegations he has faced recently, our interaction was strictly professional and devoid of any sexual nature. It reflected the typical dynamics and assertiveness of men during that era.

Combs and I had collaborated extensively and even engaged in friendly competition at times. While I often believed I had the upper hand, it turned out I was mistaken. The encounter left me fearing for my safety and had a lasting impact on my mental well-being.

The backdrop of this incident was marked by the aftermath of the tragic deaths of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. At the time, I had just been appointed editor in chief of Vibe, a renowned music magazine founded by Quincy Jones and Time Inc. in 1992. Our mission was to celebrate and acknowledge Black music and culture, especially at a time when it was underrepresented.

With the hip-hop scene reeling from the losses of iconic figures, Combs stood out as a central figure embodying both the mourning and the commercial aspects of the industry. His record label, Bad Boy Records, was achieving unprecedented success, propelled by artists like Biggie and Mase, as well as Combs’s own hit album “No Way Out.”

My vision for the December 1997/January 1998 issue of Vibe was to feature Combs on the cover, adorned with white feathered wings. Inspired by a poster from the film “Heaven Can Wait,” I aimed to capture a blend of celestial and mischievous elements in the photoshoot.

The shoot took place in Manhattan, and it was my first prolonged interaction with Combs. Despite feeling somewhat overwhelmed in the crowded setting, I was determined to ensure the success of the shoot. As a Black woman in a leadership role, I faced the pressure of meeting expectations while navigating potential biases.

Ultimately, Combs reluctantly agreed to don the white wings for the shoot, and we managed to capture the desired imagery, blending heavenly and edgy aesthetics. The experience was a mix of challenges and accomplishments, reflecting the complexities of working in a male-dominated industry.
