According to data compiled by the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), car sales in Turkey increased by 7.3% in the January-June period of 2022 compared to the same period last year, reaching 462,955. The most preferred body type during this period was SUV models with a 54.8% share and 253,667 sales. Thus, one in every two cars was preferred as an SUV.
SUV models continued to be the most preferred body type, leaving sedan models behind with a 26.6 percent share and 123,243 sales. Hatchback models ranked third with a 17.4 percent share and 80,760 sales. Other sales consisted of “MPV, CDV, sports and station wagon” body types.
SUV Car Sales in the Last 5 Years
When body type preferences in the automotive market are examined between 2018 and 2022, the increasing popularity of SUV models draws attention. In 2020, sedan models had a 44.1% share in the market, while SUV models had a 27.6% share and hatchback models had a 25.2% share.
In 2021, the share of sedan models was recorded as 41.3%, the share of SUV models as 34.1% and the share of hatchback models as 22.6%. In the first half of 2022, the share of SUV models in the market was determined as 39.7%, leaving sedan models behind. While the share of sedan models was 36.1%, the share of hatchback models was 22.2%.
