More than 80 lawyers, academics, and activists in the United Arab Emirates who were convicted in national security trials after advocating for political reforms were expecting to be released from prison as their sentences expired. However, their hopes were shattered when they were prosecuted again.

The authorities accused the men of establishing a “terrorist” organization known as the Justice and Dignity Committee. In a recent ruling by a court in Abu Dhabi, 10 individuals were sentenced to an additional 10 to 15 years behind bars, while 43 others received life imprisonment. The court dismissed the cases against 24 defendants and acquitted one person, leaving the fate of the remaining defendants uncertain.

Ahmed Al Nuaimi, an Emirati dissident residing in London, expressed shock at the severe sentences, questioning why advocating for democracy could lead to such harsh punishment. He himself was tried in absentia in the case, and his brother, who is currently imprisoned, was given a life sentence.

Life imprisonment in the UAE typically entails a 25-year term. However, for many of the detainees who are elderly, the lengthy sentences are akin to life without parole, causing distress among their families.
