Tech giant Apple has issued a warning on how to identify potential threats and how to protect yourself from attacks. Hackers are running SMS phishing campaigns that aim to direct users to a link with an “important request” about their iCloud accounts through fake messages that appear to be from Apple.

To protect against such attacks, Apple has urged iPhone owners to use two-factor authentication, which requires a password and a six-digit verification code. These security measures are critical for maintaining control over users’ devices, accessing personal and financial information and preventing unauthorized purchases.

  • California-based security firm Symantec warned that the attack, discovered this month, included links that directed users to fake websites and encouraged them to provide their Apple ID information.
  • “These credentials are extremely valuable, providing control over the device, access to personal and financial information, and potential gain through unauthorized purchases,” Symantec warned in a statement on its website.
  • Apple has warned on its support page that scammers may try to trick users into disabling iPhone security features, and that users should be wary of such requests.

“They will claim that this is necessary to help stop an attack or allow you to regain control of your account,” Apple informed its users, and offered important tips for spotting fake messages.
