The summit, which was decided to be held upon the suggestion of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, will be attended by the presidents and senior officials of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz will also attend the summit. The leaders of Turkmenistan, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Hungary will also attend the summit as observers.
The theme of the summit is “Building a Sustainable Future through Transport Connectivity and Climate Action” and the leaders will discuss strengthening the Middle Corridor and other transport links. They will also discuss preparations for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which Azerbaijan will host from November 11-22.
At the Turkic States Summit, it is planned to approve documents related to TDT projects and for the heads of the state to sign the Karabakh Declaration. Before the summit, the TDT Foreign Ministers Council will also meet in Shusha to finalize the summit agenda items and the documents to be signed.
TRNC President Tatar Will Also Attend the Summit
Upon Aliyev’s invitation, TRNC President Ersin Tatar will also attend the summit. Aliyev stated that it will accelerate the unity of the Turkic people and said, “The TRNC President will also attend the summit to be held in Shusha upon my invitation.” Tatar also welcomed the invitation and said, “The steps taken towards the visibility of the TRNC and its greater acceptance by the international community give strength to our policy.”
Holding the Summit in Shusha Has Symbolic Importance
President Ilham Aliyev, in his speech at the 13th General Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TURKPA), stated that it was not enough for TDT leaders to come together once a year and suggested holding an informal summit in Shusha. Aliyev, who stated that he accepted the invitation of TDT leaders, said, “Holding the summit in Shusha has a great symbolic meaning. Shusha is being rapidly reconstructed after it was liberated. This is a big step for the reconstruction of the regions liberated from “occupation.”
