The Trial for the Armed Attack Killing of Former Ülkü Ocakları Chairman Sinan Ateş Has Begun in Ankara
The trial process has begun regarding the death of former Ülkü Ocakları General Chairman Sinan Ateş in an armed attack in Ankara. The first hearing of the case after 19 months will see the defendants held accountable before the court. While many police officers were on duty around the trial, many political party leaders took their places in the courtroom to follow the hearing. There was tension in the courtroom from time to time.
Security Measures Taken Before Hearing
Intense security measures were taken around the Sincan Penal Institutions Campus before the hearing. Police search points were set up and vehicle traffic was not allowed at the entrance. Complainants and their relatives, press, visitors and lawyers were allowed through separate entrances. After being admitted, registration was made and passage to the courtroom was provided.
Political Party Leaders Follow the Case
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu, Gelecek Party Chairman Ahmet Davutoğlu, DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan, Homeland Party Chairman Muharrem İnce, Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ and CHP 7th Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu are among the names following the case. In addition, former Ülkü Ocakları Chairman Suat Başaran, Atila Kaya and Alişan Satılmış are also following the hearing.
Özel, Kılıçdaroğlu and Ateş Sat Side by Side
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who was sitting next to former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Ayşe Ateş in the courtroom, said in a post on his social media account, “We will be following this case until justice is served.”
The Defender Made Provocation
One of the defendants in custody at the hearing, Doğukan Çep, provoked Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu by addressing him in the courtroom. Following this, he was removed from the courtroom by the gendarmerie.
Warning from the Chief Justice
The presiding judge asked for Doğukan Çep to be brought back into the courtroom and the hearing continued. The presiding judge warned the parties not to be provoked.
Request to Join MHP Rejected
The request of the lawyer who requested to join the case on behalf of the MHP was rejected by the court. The presiding judge stated that the lawyers’ request could not be accepted.
