Hasan Altun, Chairman of the Araban District Chamber of Agriculture, issued warnings about post-harvest stubble fires in the grain fields in the Araban Plain.
Altun made important statements regarding stubble burning in the 109 thousand acres of grain planted land in the Araban Plain, 87 thousand acres of which are wheat and 22 thousand acres of which are barley. Emphasizing that stubble fires cause billions of liras worth of material damage every year, Altun called on farmers to be conscious and to prefer alternative methods instead of stubble burning.
Altun’s Statements:
- Burning stubble destroys beneficial creatures and organic matter in the soil,
- It reduces the fertility of the soil and negatively affects the quality of agricultural products,
- Increases water and wind erosion and reduces soil resistance,
- It was stated that it disrupts the natural balance and causes harmful insects and diseases to multiply.
Altun said that mixing the stubble into the soil after the grain harvest will provide many benefits to the soil and prevent the damage caused by burning the stubble. He stated that by mixing the stubble into the soil, the organic matter content will increase, the nutrients useful to the plant will increase and the soil resistance against erosion will increase.
Reminding that it is forbidden to burn empty areas covered with stubble and dry grass, Altun called on farmers to be sensitive about conscious agricultural practices.
