Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Mehmet Özhaseki stated that important steps have been taken to find a solution to the mucilage problem in the Marmara Sea. Referring to the causes of mucilage, Minister Özhaseki emphasized that a joint effort should be made to protect the Marmara Sea.

Nitrogen and Phosphorus Dispersion in the Marmara Sea

Minister Özhaseki stated that increasing temperatures due to climate change caused various disasters around the world and that this situation also affected the Marmara Sea. He also stated that there was intense nitrogen and phosphorus dispersion in the Marmara Sea due to wastewater that was not treated in advanced biological treatment facilities and agricultural fertilizers.

Marmara Sea Action Plan

Minister Özhaseki announced that the mucilage on the sea surface was cleaned and wastewater discharge facilities continued to be kept under control within the scope of the Marmara Sea Action Plan prepared in 2021. Stating that the aim is to restore the Marmara Sea to its former days, Minister Özhaseki emphasized that the pollution load must be reduced in order to achieve this goal.

Minister Özhaseki stated that a Scientific and Technical Board was formed with the participation of 21 scientists to protect the future of the Marmara Sea, and that a 22-article action plan should be implemented. Minister Özhaseki, who drew attention to the fact that mucilage could turn into an ecological disaster, shared his concerns about the pollution and loss of vitality of the Marmara Sea.

Minister Özhaseki stated that instead of looking for culprits, we should work together to restore the Marmara Sea to its former glory. Drawing attention to the fact that the Marmara Sea continues to be polluted and deteriorated every passing day, Minister Özhaseki emphasized that correct and determined steps should be taken.
