Syrian President Bashar Assad made important statements regarding Syria-Turkey relations during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Special Representative Alexander Lavrentiev.
Assad emphasized that the basis of any effort to improve Syrian-Turkish relations is “respect for Syria’s sovereignty.” He stated that “they are open to Syrian-Turkish relations as long as the sovereignty of the Syrian State over all its territory is respected and based on the principle of fighting against terrorism.”
Russia: We are ready to advance negotiations
Stating that Russia supports all initiatives aimed at normalizing relations between Syria and Turkey, Lavrentiev said, “The conditions are favorable for mediation, and as Russia, we are ready to advance negotiations.” He stated that the main goal is to normalize relations between the two countries.
Turkey and Syria severed diplomatic relations in 2012 following the start of the civil war. Steps taken to develop and normalize relations between the two countries are important for ensuring stability in the region.
