Lukashenko’s Statement on Nuclear Weapons
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made striking statements in an interview with Russian state television channel Rossiya about whether he is ready to press the “red button” to use the nuclear weapons in the country.
“All that’s left is to press the ‘reddest’ one”
Lukashenko said the “red button” had already been pressed everywhere regarding nuclear weapons, “These red buttons have already been pressed around Belarus and Russia. All that remains is to press the ‘reddest’ one.”He used the expression. This statement is considered as a situation that could increase international security concerns.
“This is the border of the Belarus-Russia Union State”
Lukashenko stressed that it would not be morally appropriate to talk about this with Russian President Vladimir Putin while making such critical decisions. “When tactical nuclear weapons appeared in Belarus, I directly told them (our foreign opponents): We will not use any weapons until you step on our state borders. This is the border of the Belarus-Russia Union State.”These words are perceived as a message of determination and unity in Belarus’s defense policy.
