FETÖ’s Coup Attempt
The Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) attempted a treacherous coup on the night of July 15 by attempting to infiltrate the Turkish Armed Forces. The coup attempt was a vile attack on Turkey’s democracy and national will.
The July 15 Coup Attempt Process
- FETO had previously carried out activities against the government and the Turkish Armed Forces through various conspiracies, but were unsuccessful.
- Upon the instructions of the organization’s leader, Fetullah Gülen, members of the organization prepared the coup plan and began the coup attempt on the night of July 15, 2016.
- Hours before the coup attempt, an MİT officer reported that FETO members were planning to detail Hakan Fidan, thus ensuring that the coup started early.
- When Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar became aware of the coup attempt, action was taken and precautions were taken.
- The putschists launched attacks on critical points in the city using planes taking off from Akıncı Base in Ankara.
- At the call of President Erdoğan, the people took to the streets and resisted the coup.
- Thanks to the courage of the people and the patriotic security forces, the coup attempt was defeated after approximately 21 hours.

The July 15 coup attempt is remembered as one of the darkest moments in Turkish history. However, thanks to the unity and solidarity of the nation, the putschists were not allowed to pass and democracy and the national will were protected.
