(IZMIR) –Member of the Board of Directors of the Izmir Medical Chamber and Faculty Member of the Department of Public Health at Dokuz Eylül University. Dr. Gül Ergör warned citizens by stating that increasing air temperatures increase the risk of heat stroke. Prof. Dr. Emphasizing that heat stroke can lead to serious consequences, Ergör said, “Especially the elderly, those with chronic diseases, pregnant women, young children and babies are at risk.”
Prof. Dr. Ergör stated that extreme heat has negative effects on human health. Stating that the sweating reflex is activated and fluid loss occurs as the body temperature rises, Ergör said that heat stroke can progress to heart palpitations, feeling of fainting, cramps and loss of consciousness.
What to Do When Exposed to Heat Stroke
- It should be taken to a cool place immediately.
- The body must be cooled
- Clothes should be loosened
- Must be transported to the health center by ambulance
Sun Protection Recommendations
Prof. Dr. Ergör advised citizens to protect themselves from sunlight, recommending wearing hats, glasses, long-sleeved thin clothes, drinking water and using sunscreen. He emphasized that especially risk groups should not go out in hot weather.
Air Conditioning Use and Importance
Prof. Dr. Ergör stated that concerns about the use of air conditioning are unnecessary and that being in air-conditioned environments does no harm to health. He said that the use of home air conditioners provides comfort and regulates body temperature, especially in hot weather.
