Gaza Assessment by Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health
United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, Tlaleng Mofokeng, expressed the painful realities in Gaza. He stated that it is not possible to name the situation in Gaza other than “genocide”. Mofokeng stated that access to health services in Gaza has become impossible and emphasized that people are struggling to survive.
Mofokeng, who stated that the health infrastructure in Gaza had collapsed following the intense attacks, said that the mental health of the people in Gaza had also been seriously affected. Mofokeng, who emphasized the importance of establishing a ceasefire, pointed out that life in Gaza could thus return to normal.
Mofokeng stated that thousands of people were trapped under rubble as a result of Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza, and this debris needed to be cleared. He stated that information about the situation of health facilities in Gaza, where it has become difficult to provide health services, comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other aid organizations.
Mofokeng, who stated that the cost of reconstructing Gaza was a political issue, stressed that the international community should intervene in the crisis in Gaza. He stated that it was unacceptable for the US and European countries to provide economic, political and diplomatic support to Israel, and called for an end to the nightmare in Gaza.
Mofokeng stated that the occupation and apartheid regime in Gaza constituted genocide and that what is happening in the context of illegal occupation should be called genocide. Mofokeng stated that attacks on the right to health are unacceptable and emphasized that such violence must end.
