Forest Fire in Karşıyaka
A large forest fire broke out at 21.10 yesterday evening in the Karatepe location of Yamanlar Mountain in Karşıyaka district of Izmir. The first response to the flames was made at 21.15, just five minutes after the fire started. 13 waterers, 3 water supply vehicles, 2 dozers and 3 ground teams belonging to the Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry made an intense effort throughout the night to control the fire.
As the sun rose, aircraft began to intervene in the fire. During the fire extinguishing efforts, 2 aircraft, 5 helicopters and 15 waterers, as well as 5 water supply vehicles, 2 dozers and 3 ground crews provided land support. However, due to the strong wind in the region, it became difficult to control the flames and the flames posed a danger of approaching residential areas. While the smoke rising from the fire covers the city center, the teams’ efforts to control the flames continue.
Two Neighborhoods Evacuated
Due to the forest fire on Yamanlar Mountain, Doğançay and Sancaklı neighborhoods, where the flames were advancing dangerously, were evacuated as a precaution. This has become a major concern for residents in the area.
Three Houses Damaged
During the fire, serious damage occurred to 3 houses in Doğançay District as a result of the flames spreading. Reinforcement teams and equipped vehicles were sent to the region to fight the fire. Teams continue to fight the fire, both from the air and on the ground, in difficult weather conditions. Izmir Governor Süleyman Elban also visited the fire area, received information from the authorities and supported the efforts.
