The fire, which broke out in agricultural land near the village of Kumköy in Çanakkale’s Eceabat district at around 16.05 yesterday and spread to the forest area, was taken under control as a result of intensive intervention that lasted 24 hours. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, announced in his statement in the morning that the progress of the fire was stopped and efforts were made to bring it under control. Stating that there was no loss of life in the incident, Minister Yumaklı stated that 575 hectares were damaged.
Taking Fire under Control
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Yumaklı announced that the forest fire in Çanakkale Eceabat was under control. Minister Yumaklı said, “We checked whether it would be possible for some places to become active due to the strong wind. We passed over the entire area twice. As of now, the Çanakkale Eceabat fire is under control. With 9 planes, 6 helicopters , 94 sprinklers and construction machines, 540 personnel. As of now, we have reached approximately 300 vehicles, including our helicopters, UAVs and construction equipment, with the participation of AFAD, the governorship, other public institutions and some institutions in the private sector, and nearly a thousand of our friends have fought the fire. “They will also publish what they see,” he said.
While the forest fire was barely brought under control, restrictions were imposed on harvesting and bale tying to prevent other fires. In the statement made by Çanakkale Governorship, “Due to the fact that most of the fires that frequently occur in our city in 2024 are agricultural (combine harvesters and baler machines, etc.); the use of haybays, which are installed on balers throughout the harvest season for the purpose of shredding straw and cause fires at the time of shredding, “It has been decided that the harvesting and bale tying works with combine harvesters will start at 06.00 on 19-22 June and end at 11.00 due to the strong winds and increasing air temperatures that will continue until 23 June 2024.”
