Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen published footage of the attack on a Greek ship in the Red Sea on June 12. Since November, the Houthis have carried out more than 60 attacks on international commercial ships. A total of 4 sailors lost their lives as a result of the attacks.
Statements and Goals of the Houthis
Yahya Saree, spokesman for the armed wing of the Iran-backed Houthis, stated that the attacks will continue. The Houthis announced that they will continue their actions against ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel’s attacks in Gaza. Saree stated that the reason for the attacks was that ships violated the ban on entering occupied Palestinian ports.
Following the attack on the ship named Tutor on June 12, a Filipino crew member lost his life. With the sinking of the Greek ship, the Houthis targeted the second ship in the Red Sea. The British cargo ship hit by the Houthis on February 18 also sank.
