Albania Census Results Announced
Albanian Statistical Institute (INSTAT) announced that the country’s population was determined as 2.4 million, a decrease of 420 thousand compared to the 2011 census. Data on the census conducted between 18 September and 15 November 2023 were shared with the public by INSTAT General Manager Elsa Dhuli at an event held in Tirana.
Director General Dhuli stated that the population consists of 2 million 402 thousand 113 people, 50.4% of which are women and 49.6% are men. He also explained that there are 755 thousand 950 families in the country and each family consists of an average of 3.2 members.
Ethnic and Religious Distribution
According to INSTAT data, when the resident population in Albania was examined by ethnic origin, the following results were obtained:
- Albanians: 2,186,917 people
- Greek: 23,485 people
- Macedonian: 2,281 people
- Other ethno-cultural groups: 3,798 people
- Not mentioned above: 13,507 people
The population distribution according to religious beliefs was as follows:
- Muslim: 1,101,718 people
- Bektashi: 115,644 people
- Catholic: 201,530 people
- Atheist: 85,311 people
- Other religious groups: 3,670 people
Local Population Distribution
It was determined that 31.6% of the Albanian population lives in Tirana, 10% in Fier and 9.7% in Elbasan. It was emphasized that while there have been significant changes in the demographic structure throughout the country in the last 30 years, socio-economic developments accompanied these changes.
